Dazor/Magnification question

Question:

Thank you for all the helpful information!  Just one last question…what is the diameter of the lense itself? Tracy — Graduate Student University of Virginia, Dept of Chemical Engineering

Response:

I haven’t measured it, but I would guess it is about 4-5 inches. KathyA-Houston (who can never find a measuring tape when she needs one) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Thank you for all the helpful information!  Just one last question…what is the diameter of the lense itself?

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – For those of you who have Dazor lights, is the entire viewing area magnified or just the center?  Also, I understand that you can get various magnifications.  What magnification do you use?  What is the viewing size for that magnification? Also, once you choose a particular magnification, can you change it out later by buying an replacement lense (or an additional lense) instead of buying an entire new lamp? Tracy – I have the original one in my lamp which I believe is 3.0.  It shows the entire viewing area.  I understand you can get other magnifications but this one is perfect for me.  I don’t think there would be a problem changing it out though, it looks like it can be done quite easily.

I came home from CATS in February and promptly ordered a Dazor lamp. I bought the one on the rolling caster stand, and I just love it. I wasn’t sure which magnification to order, either, but I decided to try the 5.0, and I’m so thrilled with it I can’t tell you! I’ve got a piece of 40 count silk guaze that I could barely see, and it’s like working on large needlepoint canvas! I’m so addicted that I’m now working on practically everything with my Dazor. The 28 count fabric is huge under the magnification. One of the things that I’ve noticed, and that I think is really neat, is that I can move the lamp closer to my face and hold the fabric further away from the lamp, and the image is clear and undistorted. It’s like looking into an entire magnified little room. Everything beyond the lens is completely clear and very comfortable to look at. The lenses can be easily interchanged. You can order your Dazor with either magnification installed in it. To swap out the lens, you just unclip a spring and clip the new lens into it. You can order the other lenses from any Dazor dealer or distributor. I’m so tickled that I got the 5.0 to begin with, though, I can’t imagine wanting to go to the 3.0 now. — Catharine…..{-: Jazzbird Designs http://leadershipmanagement.com/jazzbird

I got mine for Christmas, and LOVE it. Years ago, when my eyes were younger, I could do one over one on 22 ct. Now, I can’t do better than 16 ct. My Dazor has opened up a new world for me; currently I am finishing a pice on 28 ct cashel linen. Actually, I prefer evenweave. However at 63 yrs of age, I will try anything once! Sometime simple is better. The magnifier manifies the whole thing, but as all lenses, you scoot it to your personal position. I understand the lamp "bulb" is replaceable. I don’t know too many details, because I knew I needed it, so left ads, catalogs etc all over the house before Christmas, and DH took the hint! Gill Murray

The entire viewing area is magnified. Also, I understand that you can get various magnifications.  What magnification do you use?

I use the standard lens (+3.0, I think) that came with the Dazor, but also wear magnifying glasses (the inexpensive ‘reading glasses’ from the drugstore – I believe they are +2.5).  BUT I think I wear the additional reading glasses w/the Dazor more from habit than necessity. :-} What is the viewing size for that magnification?

Not sure I understand the question, but if you are asking if you will have to shift your stitching from side to side to see a particular area to be stitched, no, it’s not that powerful.  Going from memory here, but I think a Sweetheart Tree heart (roughly 3.5 x 3.5 inches) will show up in its entirety in the lens. Also, once you choose a particular magnification, can you change it out later by buying an replacement lense (or an additional lense) instead of buying an entire new lamp?

I believe you can! Jill in IL

FWIW, when I went to HOCS I bought myself what is called a Fresnel lens.  This is a thin piece of plastic, with the lens surfaces moulded on to both sides.  They can come in many sizes, mine is about 8 in x 4 in, and cost 5 dollars US.  Being thin, they can be attached very easily to all sorts of things.  I have forgotten who sold them. — Jim Cripwell.  Treat the earth well.  For it was not given to us                by our parents, but lent to us by our children.                        Author unknown.
