Going back to one-at-a-time

Question:

No offense taken, notice I said he’s *urging* me to finish stuff, not that he’s demanding or requiring me to. After he urged me to finish some stuff night before last (as we were laying down to bed) he sorta chuckled and said "you know you can do whatever you want, but it really makes you feel great to *finish* something once in a while instead of just *starting* things" he’s right, I have about 15 or 20 books that I’ve started over the last 5 years, really want/intend to finish them (various stuff, business, history, fun, etc) — so this summer I’ve been *finishing* books before I buy any more. I organized stash yesterday — I’ve got more stuff in there (designs, fabric, specialty fibers all neatly kitted by me/myself/I) than I realised. And honestly, between me you and the lamppost, when I see a design I *REALLY* like, that I want for myself or John or whatever, I buy it. My stitching-time has become more precious the last 3 years or so and I’ve become disinclined to do a lot of stuff I would have a few years ago. Now I’ve learned to be more selfish about what I stitch. and to my hobbies vs his hobbies == there’s no contest there. In fact, he’s so well trained (tongue in cheek :? tee hee hee) that when he gets something new, he immediately starts asking me what do I want. Honestly, I don’t want much… I have the things that are most important to me, John, my health, my leisure time, little worry about bills (we live modestly), my intelligence, and my own character (a work-in-progress). My mom says I’ve never been much of a "wanter", as a kid, we’d go shopping and I’d say "it sure would be nice to have *blank*" if I didn’t get it, no problem, I’d just go home and read a comic book or play w/ my dolls. I’ve always been pretty good at compromising and "gratitude is an attitude". Dear me, I’ve digressed a lot, but thanks for helping me to think about things this morning. BTW: before you start thinking I’m a *wildly* disillusioned bubble-head (grinning), I have a PhD in Biomechanical and Agricultural Engineering. I’m very used to competing and succeeding in a highly male-dominated and male-patterned environment (actually, I’m damned good at what I do). There aren’t a lot of women in my field(s) and one of the reasons I like rctn (and these OT discussions) is it give me a chance to think about stuff that I don’t "see" everyday. Okay, gonna go eat breakfast now, Susan in Indiana – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -DH is urging me to finish what’s on my WIPO list before I start anything else… No offense Susan, but I just LOVE statements like this.  I recently went the LNS with my sister in-law who saw several things she wanted. Unfortunately, her husband would not *allow* her to buy anything else because she was still working on a peguin pattern (for 2 years, thank you).  I’m telling you I almost came UNGLUED at this remark. The day my husband urges, forbids, or *allows* me to do/not do anything concerning MY hobbie is the day he will not buy one more lure until he catches a fish with the one he has, buys one bullet to go duck hunting with and wears out one shoe before using the other…Please!!! Again, I hope I haven’t offended you Susan because it certainly was not my intention nor was this the first time I have seen comments like yours. I say …"Stitchers Unite" and tell the world who *actually* does wear the pants in the family!! Lori (yadda, yadda, yadda)

Dawn, yes this also happens to me from time to time..That is when I start another craft..only to come back to xstitch again.. At the moment I am quilting. But am ready to start another xstitich now. I miss it and enjoy it more than anything else I have tried Robyn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi all, Anyone else have this problem?  .  But I just haven’t been able to cross-stitch for almost two months.  This has never happened to me before.   Dawn

Response:

I go through stages all the time where I don’t want to look at another pattern, needle, piece of cloth, or floss.  I have a number of hobbies so before I get too burned out on stitching, I’ll pick up a book and read the whole thing.  Sometimes it takes a number of books before I’m ready to stitch, but it helps break the monotony of just doing one hobby all the time.  I wouldn’t worry about going through slumps every once in a while… It happens to the best of us. I’ve gone through a big slump with my French Cafe scene.  I think it is because I just feel overwhelmed with it sometimes.  What I’ve found that helps me (just recently) is doing little projects.  I’ve been working on small ornaments and they go by quickly.  Makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. I am with Kim . At the moment I have 3 projects in a rotation. I don’t see myself getting any more done. Hi all, Anyone else have this problem?  I had been doing very nicely with a rotation until I started a Just Nan piece for a co-worker and friend who got  moved to a different job.  I guess I don’t want to finish it because then I think she’ll really be gone, but I mean she’s just in another building.  But I just haven’t been able to cross-stitch for almost two months.  This has never happened to me before.  Maybe I’m just in a slump.  At the rate I’m going I’ll be lucky to finish the Just Nan piece for Christmas.  HELP. We put up with it because they managed to make our self esteem so low we didn’t have any.  Mine would write the odometer reading on the car each morning and I would have to account for every mile driven for the day.  If I was even 5 minutes late getting home in the evening I had to have a very good, verifiable, reason.  I spent countless hours in theraphy after my divorce before I realized it was HIM not me.  My in-laws even told me to divorce him because they could see what was happening.   One thing though – God gave me a new and wonderful DH to make up for it all. penguin

I also do one project at a time.  I wonder how many of us are out there that do that?  I do design mine so pretty much don’t put myself into a shoppe where it would be harder.  I don’t hit the shoppe until I have a total list of what is required for the "Next Project".  Right now what I am doing takes up so much room and I have only a certain number of minutes per week to work on it right now.  It will be awhile before I am ready again ,,, I used to have the luxury to stitch one hour a day. Susan, What a great attitude, and what a great DH.  Congratulations and hope you continue to live long and prosper. Lori, I also go nuts when I hear women say "my husband won’t allow" or "my husband won’t let me" or "my husband doesn’t want me to…" .   Rubbish, the women who say this are making the choice of allowing themselves to be dominated..OR, they are using the DH to make excuses and cop out for things they don’t want to do anyway, and don’t have the chutzpah to admit.  Either way, they need to stand up for themselves as human beings with a mind, a decision, and an opinion. Used to hear the my husband won’t allow a fair amount of the time when I sold Avon.  I always grinned, and questioned back jovially about their dh not allowing them to purchase deodorant, shampoo, moisturizer and other daily items.  Usually got a regular customer in the end.  Mind you, this was a 16 year old initially, and last sold when I was 25, now 42.  Some just need a little help thinking about things for themselves. — Pam Thompson Women who strive to be equal to men lack ambition. remove gb.girl for e-mail – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – No offense taken, notice I said he’s *urging* me to finish stuff, not that he’s demanding or requiring me to.
