Evening Snacks??
Question:
Jenny, you are correct! The parents of today that do not understand their children should check out the TV shows that are raising their children…. Bubble gum for the brain? Who said that???? George – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Even better than giving up the TV snacks, why not try giving up TV for a few months? For various reasons, I did this back when my now 16-year-old daughter was in kindergarten. In my own life the result of putting the box in the garage was that I completed my first published book, my ex- finished his first album and my daughter went into first grade reading at the 5th grade level. When my current sweetheart moved in with me he too had the typical American TV habit (saying "I hardly watch at all" but actually putting in 2 or 3 hrs a night.) Two years later, having stopped watching TV, he had his own gallery show displaying works in craft he hadn’t ever studied when he moved in–and he went on to earn over $3,000 selling his work that year. People have no idea how much time they waste watching TV. I’m convinced that passive viewing has a lot to do with the current episode of depression we have in this country. Once you get rid of the box you are likely to seek out real people, rather than actors, to add to your life and to participate in real human relationships, not passive watching of shadows. If you like sports, play them! If you love music, take lessons. Life is too short to spend it watching mass produced fantasies intended to make you buy things! Just a thought. . . — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<

I used to watch 5 to 6 hours of TV a day. Now I see 3 or 4 a month. There is just too much to do. It is true how much we can get out of a day if you don’t sitt on your arse all day watching the boob tube. — Tim 390/326/250

We are not just sitting in front of the screen, we are WRITING! This engages our active thought processes and is a very healthy, creative thing to do. In fact, this generation of computer-loving teens is the first one since the 1870s who use writing as a major way of staying in touch with their kids. I see a dramatic improvement in my own teens’ writing skills as a result. It is the passivity of watching TV that is so dangerous. You do nothing but sit there responding to sensory cues. — Jenny *Sorry about the lack of email address but I’m up to here with spam :<

Oh, I agree with you about this 100%. However, we ARE just sitting. It is important to remember that while you are sitting you should periodically stretch, roll your ankles, get up and walk around, etc. YES we are being creative and social and are using our minds, but our bodies need work, TOO! I’m thrilled to be able to converse with so many people from so many places! I’ve learned so much about a variety of things, but I stress that exercise is INVALUABLE! Hi again, Just went out and bought the pork rinds. Did not like them at all. Oh well, but I found a spinach dip with only 1g carb/serving that’s pretty good with celery. –Jenn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Almonds, beef jerky, veggies & dip What to do when sitting on the couch watching TV and can’t have popcorn or chips or pretzels?? Both Atkins and PP say Pork Rinds. I haven’t tried them myself, but I’m getting close to purchasing a bag. There’s just something about the name!
I tasted pork rinds for the first time this weekend. I was, uh, underwhelmed… maybe it was the brand, they were kind of nasty. Atalanta Pendragonne Save VENGEANCE UNLIMITED! http://www.angelfire.com/tx2/susano

Simple. I never sit on the couch and watch TV! I’m on the computer instead so my hands are busy.
Have you though about taking up knitting or quilting? Keeps your hands busy and is calorie and carb free. When I used to watch TV on occasion (I can’t even remember the last time I turned the set on) I always had a quilt in my lap to work on. — Debbie Cusick I plan to be a procrastinator some day if I ever get around to it. Plain pork are pretty disgusting, IMHO. Can you get the "hot and spicy" version? Those are much better, and you can drink a liter of water at the same time! I do needlepoint. Why eat all the time?
I, too, find other things to do with my hands. If I don’t have a hobby project out, I file my nails, brush the cats, play with my hand-weights, etc. I don’t believe in snacking while watching TV, unless you set out a specific portion and put the rest away. It has a tendency to become a sort of unconscious eating, where you hardly notice what or how much you’re eating, and continue because it’s in front of you, rather than because you’re still hungry. I think they are probably an acquired taste. I grew up in the good ole South and have eaten pork rinds and cracklings all my life. Pork rinds are ok for a crunchy snack, especially the barbeque flavor. Bagged cracklings are much better, IMO. I bought some today. And *fresh* cracklings are wonderful. My great-uncle used to have a sugarcane farm and also raised a few pigs. Every year, they would have a ‘boucherie’ (butchering). All the relatives would converge for the whole weekend. We’d eat pit roasted pork, cracklings, homemade sausage and boudin (a cajun sausage made with pork, pork liver, rice and lots of seasoning). They’d also cook enormous pots of jambalaya, plus a myriad of other foods. It was a 48 hr long food fest. Man, those were the days! <g Regina Never buy a sweater that don’t match your cat.—Modine Gunch

I’m with you on this one! I gave up t.v. a year ago when I went back to school. I didn’t see how I could possibly work full time, go to school full time, go to two hours of dance classes a day, five days a week and have a boyfriend and watch t.v. *too*. Something had to give. I also decreased the amount of movies I went to. Debby 310/209/150 – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Even better than giving up the TV snacks, why not try giving up TV for a few months? Try this! get pork rinds, some shredded cheese, salsa, a little green chile, pop it into the old microwave—add sour cream maybe some guacamole–poof! NACHOS! Also, I like pepperoni chips! (wal mart has the cheapest thin sliced pepperoni in my town) you have to use the really thin ones so they crisp up in the microwave. I do a bag at a time and keep some in a zip lock bags ( I crush them inside) and put them on my salads.
