MarBek Nativity

Question:

My sister did it from start to finish in 1 year.  All on one piece of material. It was gorgeous!!  Frances

How did she finish it? Did she have it custom framed as one large picture? Do tell more……. Carol

Response:

I’ve seen the completed Nativity at The Counting House – Pawley’s Island, SC – a great shop! AnneM in NC

Response:

I am afraid to even purchase the patterns though because I am such a slow stitcher that I know it will take me years(!!!) to finish.

It will (eventually) be framed as 1 piece.  The directions on the 2 center panels state that if you are going to work all on 1 piece to extend the bottom rays of the star by an additional 35 stitches, keeping the same pattern. That’s the way she did it.  I chickened out and just got the 2 center panels done and then decided I didn’t like it on the ivory aida, so quit and one of these days, I am going to get some pretty blue or maybe even black evenweave and start over and do it all on 1 piece.  The part that I finished, I am sending to my best friend’s daughter, because she wants to do the scene in the 5 panels.  This will give her a good start on doing so.  Frances Take Jacques out before replying.

This sounds gorgeous! I’ve never seen it done this way, but it sounds like something to seriously consider. I agree with you – it would be spectacular done on a blue or black (tho someone is using green and that sounds very attractive, too) evenweave in one piece. Wow. Something else to think/dream/plan about :) Carol Greenville SC

I’ve been working, off and on, mostly off, for the past two years…but there is one glitch in my "production"….I am coverting it all to needlepoint….I now have a frame holding an 8′ x 40" canvass with the nativity scene finished…and am seriously thinking of leaving it at that and cut the canvass down to the Nativity Scene size….Hey, I still have the background to stitch…at this rate it will take me fifty years to complete the all the panels…. I, too, have the Holy Family done along with the wise man in the red coat. When I get around to it, I’m going to put the standing wise man behind him and flip the other wise kneeeling wise man to go at Joseph’s feet. When that is stitched (I’m anticipating five years from now), I’ll figure out if I need a star and where to put it. I just can’t see me stitching the whole thing. It just won’t happen. I started it about 1990 and have stitched on it sporadically. But I put it up every Christmas in its incomplete state. I did email the publisher and get permission (for me) to copy the wise man chart and flip it. They were very nice. Beth Katz

I am curious if anyone out there has completed or even seen a completed Nativity by MarBek. This is the large set of 6 charts that were designed by Rebecca Waldrop. It consists of a chart each of :The Nativity", "The Betlehem Star"," The Wise Men", "The Shepherds", "The Shepherd Boy", and "The Camel". I have been working on this for three years now(I only work on it from about late Sept thru Xmas), and was curious how long it took to finish. This was the first work I had ever done with Balger and it took some getting used to. Thanks, Scott Share what you know. Learn what you don’t.

Michael Parenteau will probably weigh in on this thread with the correct stats–I can remember only that he finished this piece in a shockingly short time. This is the piece that ignited my desire to learn counted cross stitch. Several years ago I saw first a partially-completed panel, and later the entire framed piece, and it knocked me for a loop. I had had no idea that such stitchery existed! Nan Evelyn

I completed the entire Nativity.  It took me 9 months.  Yes, I felt as though I had a baby.  I did not work on anything else during this time.  When I left it to have it put in the frames, I felt as though I was leaving a child. Janet

Hi, I’m currently working on my first panel of the Nativity. I am almost done with the Camel.  I only started it last Labor Day.  I have a mailing list set up for anyone who is working on the Nativity.  It’s fairly new and really slow at this time. So I’m looking for new members who like to chat. Here is the url at onelist to join, if you would like: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/CrossStitchNativity I have seen the Nativity completed both at a needlework store in Finley, Ohio (years ago, so I don’t know if it’s still there) and also this past weekend at Cross Stitch & More in Gainesville, Florida. It was done on the light colored fabric both times and beautiful.  I’m doing it on 18 ct black Aida myself. Scott it took me 7 months to complete.  That was before I go a computer but after I retired.  Mine has been framed so several years. I used suggested frame but also covered with glass.  I do not have a place to display so my husband brings it out to brag and we also display it at Xmas. I am astonished every time I see it, thinking did I really do that? It is breathtaking.  Well worth the time & effort to complete. Barbara

CrossStitch Buddies is starting a Stitchalong on the Nativity on 1/1/00 http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/5680/ I am going to start it then.  I already have the metalics, the frames and the fabric.  I desided on dark green linen. Karen

Barbara thanks!!! I have the frames, still in their shipping box, sitting in my closet.  But I was wondering if it would be possible to use glass with them.  You answered my question.

Scott, I finished the MarBek Nativity in 13 months.  But I see from some of the other responses that others have finished it in less time than that.  This was my "main" project during those months even though I did some smaller projects at the same time. Mine was done on 18ct Aida because 36ct evenweave was too small for my old eyes (even with new bi-focals). It is framed in the five section frame from Serendipity and  has been "on display" in our family room since last December. The best skill I acquired from doing this project is the ability to work with blending filament.  Once anyone finishes the Nativity, they have to be classified as an expert in blending filament.  I still refer to camel section as the "Kreinik Camel". I live in Bonita Springs and was given some free tickets to Mote’s Marine. Since that will put me near St. Pete could you give me the address to The Stitching Post, I would love to see that stitched and I ALWAYS need more stash.
