Thimble Cages
Question:
I just received my Keepsake Quilting Catalog last night and they have lovely sterling silver thimble cages for US$49.99. They also have the thimble to go in it and a 30" necklace and a needle case. They are all sterling. The catalog’s number is 1-800-865-9458. Anne Powell also carries various thimble cages and buckets. I can’t wait to see what she has at her booth at Austin SOXS! OH! There’s also some neat "Sampler Fabric" in that Keepsake Quilting catalog, too. Two fabrics. Both 100% cotton flannel. One is various alphabets in different sizes (12" repeat) and the other is sampler motifs (25" repeat) like houses, trees, flowers, animals… They both look like antique cross stitch. What fun!=] Jen I recently got a pattern for a Crazy Quilt Sewing Chateleine designed by Judith Baker Montano (who designs amazing silk ribbon embroidery projects). Among the needlework tools included in the photograph of the completed piece was a thimble cage. I had never seen one before. Does anyone have any information about thimble cages? Are they still available, or only as antiques? (I asked Lydia at Wyndham Needleworks and she suggested Dawn Lewis or Anne Powell as possible sources – I will be contacting them, but wondered if anyone had any other ideas.) I have been seeing thimble cages for years in the Keepsake Quilting catalogs. They have had at least two different types that I can recall. The common one and the one most likely to be found this issue is rather birdcage like, made in two halves that are hinged at the bottom. Teardrop shaped, it is held together at the top by a ring that slides up and down the chain. The other is like a teeny metal coin purse that I have also seen in the Ann Powell catalog. Ann also has a small bucket shaped thimble carrier. I have a catalog of hers carefully put away… Wombat Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most.

Hi Julie I am one of Dawn’s customers – she only carries antiques. I am also an Anne Powell customer. They carry contemporary pieces as well as antiques. Can you better describe the timble cage? Was it a tear drop shape or was it shaped like a fat capsule? There are contemporary pieces readily available in those shapes. BTW – my latest purchase from Dawn was a vegetable ivory needlecase – with carved acorns on either end. It is wonderful! :D Lori Lori Bell – Dancing Needle Designs

My daughter and I fashioned a chatelaine for her to wear on her belt for Civil War Re-enactments and the only thing missing is a thimble cage. She was going to crochet one out of perle cotton but I told her I thought that I had seen one in a catalogue. I haven’t been able to find it yet so I am also very interested. The only catalogue I haven’t been able to see is Clothilde. I thought it might be in that one. Thanks for any info. Carolyn

Yep, Clothilde does have a thimble cage in her catalog. Handmade, sterling silver, $23.20 + s/h. I checked in Keepsake Quilting and Nancy’s Notions, and neither one has thimble cages. Clothilde can be reached at 1-800-772-2891, M-F 7:30-4:00 CST jenn (usual disclaimers apply) — Jenn Ridley
